A MOTHER of seven from Saltash has been called a “shining example” of the difference activity can make after losing seven stone.
Following weight loss surgery last October, Joanne Knight, 51, was medically referred to Saltash Leisure Centre’s Healthwise scheme in February this year.
With a body mass index (BMI) of 50, Joanne weighed 21 stone and was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, hypertension and depression.
Now, more than seven stone lighter, her BMI has reduced to 32, her blood pressure is way down on its previous level, and her blood sugar count has decreased from 69 to 51 – just two points off prediabetes.
With children ranging in age from 33 to 16 and five grandchildren, Joanne hasn’t had much opportunity to focus on herself before but, with her family’s full support, that has all changed.
“I feel so much better,” she said. “It was daunting at first because I’d never been to a gym or done regular exercise.
“Steve Fenney and the leisure centre team have been brilliant – helping me keep on track and giving me good advice on what I should be doing and when.
“I work out in the gym at least once a week and do aquafit sessions. I also joined the Tamar Trotters couch to 5K running programme which has given me an additional boost – to the extent that I’m doing a park run most Saturday mornings.”
Health professionals can refer patients to the Healthwise programme to help prevent, manage or improve a wide range of health conditions.
“Since joining us on a Healthwise referral, Joanne’s physical and mental wellbeing have been transformed,” said Saltash Healthwise facilitator Steve Fenney. “She has lost 44 kilogrammes and is off all her medication by following an activity regime that includes swimming, fitness classes and regular resistance exercises. She has also improved her nutrition.
“The next stage will be sustaining her weight loss by boosting her metabolism and shifting her body composition, so she has more muscle and less fat.
“Joanne is a lovely lady whose progress and achievements since joining us in February are truly remarkable.”
