Plans for a Lidl store have been submitted to Caradon District Council – less than a year after an application for the same site was turned down. Lidl UK confirmed this week that a new planning application has been handed over to Caradon proposing a 'neighbourhood foodstore' at 1 Gilston Road, Saltash. Waitrose also revealed exclusively to the Cornish Times that it too is planning to submit another planning application for an extension to its Saltash store after a previous one was withdrawn in the summer. Planning officers had recommended that councillors refuse that application because of concerns that it would divert trade from the town centre. In December a plan for the Lidl store on the same Gilston Road site was refused by the full council despite the local planning committee recommending that building be allowed and 1,547 people signing a petition supporting the idea. The main reason for refusal was that councillors decided that using the site for retail purposes would result in the loss of employment land. But a spokesman for Lidl UK said this week: 'This new application provides the planning authority with substantial new information to address the reasons for refusal of our previous application last December.' The new application proposes a foodstore with a sales area of 1,286 square metres with 102 parking spaces. The Lidl spokesman added: 'As part of the proposals, infrastructure upgrades will be provided, including improvements to the Callington Road bus stop and contributions towards increased bus services to the area. A foodstore in this location will help to reduce car journeys into Plymouth by extending consumer choice within Saltash, helping to retain expenditure within Cornwall. The store would create around 30 full and part-time employment opportunities, which will be filled by local people.' A spokesman for Caradon District Council said it was likely to be the new year before consideration began. The original application for a Lidl store on the site divided the community of Saltash, but what is the feeling now? Read both sides of the story next week.
