TWO Duchy College students were awarded annual Champion Volunteers Awards last week by the South West Lakes Trust for carrying out valuable conservation work. Matthew Richardson and Dan Gay were presented with the awards by Cairns Boston, chairman of the South West Lakes Trust, and trustee Lady Mary Holborrow. Matthew Richardson, who is in the second year of a BTEC National Diploma in countryside management, undertook a voluntary work placement with Burrator Reservoir. His work included hedge laying, stone walling, coppicing and research on dormice. Dan Gay, who is in the first year of a BTEC National Diploma in countryside management, took part in a similarly wide range of conservation work based at Roadford Lake near Okehampton. Both students were nominated for the awards by their supervisors.
