EVEN without top scorer Andy Sargent - who decided to join Western League leaders Taunton - free-scoring Liskeard proved too strong for their local rivals.

Having scored four and five in their two previous league matches, the Blues took their tally to 15 from three games.

Sargent's his absence made little difference as Liskeard chalked up their 60th goal in 17 league outings, an average of over 3.5 per game.

The Blues are easily the Carlesberg South Western League's leading scorers so far this term, with five more than their nearest rivals, Holsworthy, on 55.

Millbrook did well in the first half and might have opened the scoring through Ray Clarke.

His miss seemed to kick start the visitors, who took the lead when Lee Doncaster converted a Darren Gilbert cross after 26 minutes.

Liskeard strengthened their grip after the break and in the 55th minute added a second when Justin Norman maintained his goal-a-game record since joining from Porthleven, heading in Darren Redding's cross.

Impressive midfielder Gilbert then wrapped up the points for the visitors with two goals in as many minutes.

Recent signing Paul Smith from St Blazey made it 5-0 with his first goal for the Blues and then playmaker Graham Macmillan added a sixth before Paul Baker rose above the Liskeard defence to head in a cross from Karl Curtis for Millbrook's consolation.

St Austell 2

Callington Town 3

Callington continued their return to winning ways with their fourth victory in five games to open up a four point gap over bottom club St Austell at Poltair Park on Saturday.

Since the 10-1 Charity Cup victory over the Saints some four weeks ago, Callington have recorded three wins and a draw in their last four games and now the rest of the bottom half sides in the league are within their site.

Callington had to overcome a late comeback against the home side in this match having opened up a good lead.

The opening exchanges were fairly even before Callington took the lead on 24 minutes.

Gary Williams was the creator and his ball fell to Matt Hawke who stroked it home from the edge of the area for his second of the season.

St Austell hit back and equalised courtesy of an own goal four minutes later, but Town regained the lead five minutes from the break through Chris Tilbury.

Dominic Farris increased the visitors lead midway through the second half before a late flurry of official activity brought some late tension.

First, a St Austell attacker was upended in the box and at the linesman's flag, the referee pointed to the spot.

Steve Warne netted past Town keeper Andy Brenton to reduce the arrears.

Minutes later, at the other end, Chris Gerry had his legs taken from him in the box and again a linesman flagged for a penalty but this time the referee waved play on.

But Callington held their nerve to secure their first away win of the season as they prepare for the trip to Helston in the Cornwall Senior Cup next weekend.

Launceston 0

Saltash Utd 4

ALTHOUGH Launceston started well with James Turner going close on two occasions, Saltash also forced a series of corners in the opening minute.

One of those corners paid off for the Ashes when Nick Crawford headed home a Mike Preston left wing corner in the 29th minute.

Saltash's new signings Darren Edwards and Anthony Thirlby went close, the latter being particularly unlucky when his shot only just went over the crossbar.

Mike Preston's hard workrate throughout the first half paid off in the 41st minute when slack defending allowed him to run on to the ball and shoot into the far corner of the net.

The opening minutes of the second half saw Mark Crowley's shot being forced over the bar by Paul Hider, the resultant corner being punched out to Nick Crawford whose shot was then saved by the Launceston keeper.

Alan Yendall and Liam Tiley went close for the home side before they made a series of substitutions.

Once again Mike Preston was involved in Ashes third goal when his left wing corner was headed in by Joe Davey in the 76th minute.

Man of the match Mike Preston's cross from the right wing two minutes later led to the Ashes fourth goal, Ross Saint heading home from close range.

Next match: Foxhole Stars in the Cornwall Senior Cup at Kinberley Stadium tomorrow (Sat 17th) with a 2:30pm kick off.
