THE search is on for a plot of land in the area around Calstock and Albaston that could be transformed into allotments for local people. Tamar Grow Local, a co-operative community interest company that promotes local produce in the Tamar Valley, is hunting for a suitable site of about an acre with good access and the potential for a water supply. Jonathan Selman, from Tamar Grow Local, said: 'More and more people are taking an interest in where their food comes from and are choosing local produce. 'Growing your own is a great way to get some gentle exercise, unwind and enjoy fresh, healthy, local food. Unfortunately, many of the homes in the Calstock and Albaston area have little or no garden space, which is why we're keen to set up an allotment site. 'We'd love to talk to local landowners with sites that they would consider either leasing or selling to us.' Cllr Margaret Allen, Caradon's District Council's local environment portfolio holder, said: 'Allotments are rewarding and healthy, and it would be lovely to see a site set up in an area that was so well known for market gardening in days gone by. 'There are at least 35 local households that would like access to an allotment, so the demand is definitely there.'
