A scintillating summer of events is planned in Saltash - an array of special days being highlighted at a recent Saltash Festival 2000 committee meeting.

Apart from the news that Saltash had been approached as the venue for the 2002 European water ski championships with a one-day contest for 2001, members heard that the local Lions club is to re-start the town's old Winkle Fair.

Jim Virgo, of the Lions, said the Fair would be a fun day, held at the Waterside on August 19. Two days earlier, at the Working Men's club, the Winkle King and Queen will be chosen. It is also hoped that a boat race, comprising local fishermen, will be part of the August 19 programme, as well as tug o' war and the appearance of numerous classic cars. The last time the Winkle Fair took place was l957 - and other events are being planned to mark its resurgence.

The Festival committee heard that during Saltash Regatta weekend, on July 15 and 16, the Tamar Trotters will organise a seven mile run for over 16 year olds, and a one and a half mile fun run for all ages.

Other summer highlights include a gala concert, organised for the committee by Bill Ryan.
