Redruth Albany....................9 pts

Saltash...........................................38

Other Cornwall Division One results handed Saltash the top spot on day one of the new league season.

Nigel Owen had them three points in front with a penalty as early as the second minute, and Peter Congo followed with two tries inside the opening quarter of an hour. But then came high drama as Ashes scrum half Roger Curtis appeared to swallow his tongue following a collision and left the field unable to continue.

Peter Congo moved from number eight to scrum half and Saltash reshuffled up front with Navy U-21 back row Ben Edwards making his league debut.

Home outside half Sammy Mugford sandwiched a penalty strike between tries from Simon Watson and Steve Hall as Saltash coasted comfortably into a twenty point lead at the changeover

Two second half penalty strikes from Mugford were really of little help to Albany who offered next to no threat throughout. But galvanised well together when reduced to fourteen men after the break. Restricting Saltash to just three further tries from Mark Haimes, Steve Ryan and James Rich.

LISKEARD/LOOE II .................29 pts

CALLINGTON............................10 pts

LAST Saturday, due to players being stranded without fuel, Liskeard/Looe first XV game against Camels had to be cancelled. However the 2nd XV and Callington managed to meet up to provide and interesting and entertaining rugby.

On a beautiful still afternoon both sides set out with the intention of playing fast open rugby, and so it turned out. After an early period of pressure Liskeard/Looe were rewarded when full back Tim Weale scored on the left. Anthony Bartlett kicked a wonderful conversion from some 35 yards and only a foot or so from the touchline.

Callington had a full share of possession during the first half and it was only good cover and tackling that kept them at bay. Just before half time Liskeard/Looe increased their lead when prop Danny Curgenven broke loose and showed good speed to run in from 25 yards. Once again Bartlett provided the extras.

The second half continued in the same vein, both sides playing attractive rugby and Callington opened their account with a try by skipper Nick Woodley.

Shortly after Tim Weale again joined in a good pressing movement to increase Liskeard/Looe's lead. Following some adventurous play by both sides Liskeard/Looe then picked up the try of the match. A fast movement involving splendid passing and some good running resulted in Carl Thorpe touching down.

Despite the heat both sides continued playing open rugby. Callington picked up their second try when Alan Eade touched down, but it was Liskeard/Looe who had the final say late in the game when winger Rowan crossed the line.

Liskeard/Looe fielded a young side with a few older heads to provide some experience.

It won't be very long before quite a few of those playing on Saturday make their 1st team debuts. It is great to see that a last there is some strength in depth in most positions in the club. Next Saturday Liskeard/Looe 1st XV are at home to Falmouth in the Cornwall League One. Kick Off at 3:00pm.

LANKELLY-FOWEY.................12 pts

STITHIANS .................................38 pts

THIS was supposed to be a Cornwall League Two encounter but as the official referee failed to show it was agreed to play the fixture as a friendly. Lankelly dominated the first 12 minutes at which point, against the run of play, Matthew Hampton scored a breakaway try for the visitors.

Lankelly bounced back immediately with a try from Daniel Risdon, converted by Steve Brown. Stithians then regained the lead with a converted try followed by two more tor a 26-7 half time scoreline.

Lankelly rallied after the interval putting up strong resistance and only lost the second session by two tries to one, scored by Jamie Miller. The Fowey side can take some satisfaction from their first game against a possible promotion side, whose other try scorers were Mark Pearce (3) and Steve Bradburn (2) with Greg Floyd converting four.
