A LOCAL company is making a very special edition of its pasty to support the Cornwall Air Ambulance.
Over The Top Pasties, based in Callington, have become famous for their unusual range of flavours – and the fact that their pasties are crimped ‘over the top’ as is part of their family heritage.
But for a limited time only, owners Scot Weller, Kelly Weller and Mikaela Parry have decided to make a simple steak, swede and onion pasty crimped to the side.
Each pasty has double the amount of meat most pasty-makers use, says Scot – and for each one sold, £1.50 will be donated to the Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust.
The ‘OTT Air Ambulance Pasty’ sold out in the first 40 minutes of being sold the first day in the Callington shop, said Scot, and it can also be ordered online.
So far the pasties have already raised at least £200 for the air ambulance.
“It’s quite a big deal for us moving to a side crimp. But it’s for a worthy cause we believe in,” said Scot.
“We were told by the Pasty Association we cannot call our pasty Cornish, even though we are in Callington, and we use locally sourced ingredients, because it’s top crimped.
“We have said we will never side crimp as it’s our family heritage to top crimp.
“While listening to the radio we heard that the Cornwall Air Ambulance was set to lose £1.5 million due to COVID-19,” Scot continues.
“We thought, let’s make them a pasty. It’s the only side crimp pasty we will ever do, for a great charity.”
Meanwhile, Over The Top Pasties has been given the title of ‘UK’s best pasty shop’ by Parkdean Resorts. The holiday company made an interactive map of 39 pasty outlets, combining online reviews to create a star rating.
Seven of the shops are all in St Ives – but also on the list are Sarah’s Pasty Shop in Looe, Helluva Pasties in Callington, Auntie Avices Pasty Shop at St Kew, the Bodmin Malcolm Barnecutts, The Cornish Bakery in Tintagel, and Tasty Pasties in Bude.
