A new head equine section steward has been appointed ahead of the 2018 Royal Cornwall Show.

Trevor Burley, from St Allen near Truro, will take over the horse section’s role of departmental steward when this year’s event takes place on June 7, 8 and 9.

He went to his first Royal Cornwall Show as a young child in 1951 at Newquay – and has not missed a show since.

Trevor will lead a team of 34 stewards who work to ensure the smooth running of the numerous competitive horse and pony classes at the annual three-day show held these days at the permanent showground at Wadebridge.

Trevor’s appointment came after Bevil Bunt, from St Neot, stood down from the position at last month’s annual general meeting of the Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association (RCAA).

Bevil began his stewarding career at the show in 1983 and assumed the horse section’s top role in 1995.

‘It was a privilege to work for so many years with Bevil and more recently as his deputy,’ Trevor said.

RCAA secretary Christopher Riddle said: ‘We are extremely grateful to Bevil for more than three decades of loyal service to the horse section and being departmental steward for the past 22 years. Trevor will have a hard act to follow.

‘Volunteer stewards are the life blood of the Association. They are instrumental in ensuring the show can be staged each year and maintaining its high standards and reputation.’

Entries are open for the competitive equine section classes at the 2018 Royal Cornwall Show.
