Band bids

farewell to

Don Howlett

Don Howlett, Musical Director of Liskeard Silver Band for the past eight years, is due to lay down his baton at the Annual General meeting on 7 February 2001.

Don started playing with the Morice Town Salvation Army Junior Band (Devonport) at a very young age in 1936 and played with several Salvation Army bands both in Liskeard and during his service career.

He joined Liskeard Silver Band in 1953 and later formed and conducted their Junior Band, obtaining many good results at competition.

Don was subsequently involved with teaching and conducting other junior bands at Lostwithiel and St Pinnock. He returned to Liskeard Silver Band as Musical Director in 1993 and last year received an award from the Cornwall Brass Band Association in recognition of his long service to brass banding.

After a hard but successful period Don has decided to pass the job of Musical Director over to the present Band Master Mrs Tessa Lewis, full time music teacher and Solo Horn player with Liskeard Silver Band.

Don hopes to continue his involvement with the band, teaching the youngsters and other beginners in the training band and by playing an instrument.

He also remains a trustee of the band building.

The Liskeard Silver Band invites players of all abilities to join the band at their practices on Friday evenings. Likewise, Vice Presidents, friends of the band and the public are invited to Don‚s ŒFarewell‚ Concert and Prizegiving at 7:45pm on Friday, January 26 and to the Annual General Meeting at 7:30pm on Wednesday, 7th February 2001, both at the Band Rooms in Barn Street.

Details may be obtained from the Band Secretary Tom Hoyle on 01579 348182.

Bypass meeting

with a minister

CAMPAIGNERS for a Dobwalls bypass are to hand a 2,000 signature strong petition to a government minister later this month - calling for the bypass to be built as a matter of urgency.

The signatures, collected during the half term holidays last October at Trago Mills, are to be handed to Lord Whitty, who is already well aware of the Dobwalls' traffic problems. Also attending the presentation of the petition, on January 18, will be local MP, Colin Breed.

The campaigners have pointed out that the Dobwalls scheme is likely to cost around £14 million, while works on the A30 at Goss Moor will probably cost much, much more - around £40 million.

MP to attend

market meting

SOUTH East Cornwall MP and Liberal Democrat Rural Affairs shadow minister, Colin Breed, will attend the public meeting to discuss the future of Liskeard cattle market that has been arranged for today (Friday).

He said, 'Liskeard's cattle market is an important part of South East Cornwall's economy.

There is scope for increasing the long term viability of the market by improving cattle and livestock facilities and developing a farmers' market.'

Cornish

dwellings?

LISKEARD town council has recommended to Caradon council that new dwellings off Dark Lane should be named Park Garow, Dark Lane, following the policy to encourage the use of Cornish names.

Caradon council had proposed to call the nine new dwellings The Griffins, after a previous owner.
