A 24-year-old man from South East Cornwall has become a multi-millionaire through the sale of a popular internet music site. Richard Jones, from Saltash, was made rich to the tune of £19m when Last.fm, the music site he invented ground-breaking technology for, was sold to US media giants CBS. The former Saltash.net Community School pupil joined Last.fm in 2003 after designing a system called Audioscrobbler for his dissertation at Southampton University. DJ Martin Stiksel and punk musician Felix Miller had set up Last.fm as a personalised radio station but after reading a newspaper article on scrobbling they convinced Richard to join the company for a 15 per cent stake. The system is described as a lazy way to find new music and enables Last.fm to build profiles of their customers and recommend new music to them by tracking what they listen to on their computers. Richard and his partners, who will still run the site from London, are hoping the deal will take Last.fm to bigger and better things. 'The deal feels good,' said Richard, who has seen a positive effect on the site from the increased publicity the sale has brought. 'We had been talking to CBS for a while so it has been a long time coming,' he added. Richard will be visiting his parents, brother and sister in Saltash this weekend. It will be the first time he has seen them since the news broke about the sale. 'They were quite excited,' said Richard who is still coming to terms with his new-found wealth. 'I have not had much time to dwell on it,' he added. 'It has all been a bit of a rollercoaster but there are no plans for any dramatic lifestyle changes.'
