A footballer who broke his leg in a pre-season game has been left overwhelmed by the response of his Cornish opponents.

Lamerton’s Phil Credicott suffered the injury in a game against Callington Town’s second team.  Now Town have organised a benefit game to raise money for the player, who’s self-employed.

Credicott was injured early on in the friendly against the Cornish club, which was then abandoned.  

Callington players discussed what they could do to help and organised a rapidly re-arranged friendly at the club’s Ginsters Marsh ground against Lamerton. 

Through a series of events they raised almost £800 for the player.

Callington vice-chairman Andrew Long said: ‘Although the collision was an accident, the club wanted to do something to help and decided a re-arranged friendly would be the best bet.  

‘Our original opposition, North Petherwin kindly agreed to cancel their game so we could replay the game against Lamerton. I am so proud of our guys and all those who came and supported the event and hope the help will go some way to help Phil in his recovery.’

Credicott was at the game and was left speechless by the gift at the end of the evening.
