Cornwall will be celebrating the Coronation of King Charles III in style after 40 communities applied for permission to hold street parties to mark the occasion. Cornwall Council has confirmed this is the number of events which have been organised ahead of the Coronation on the weekend of May 6.
People wanting to organise events which require a road closure have run out of time to apply to the council as it requires 12 weeks’ notice in order for arrangements to be put in place. However, whilst a number of street parties have been organised there will be many more events which do not require a road closure.
The tradition of street parties in the UK is believed to have started as a mass event in 1919 when Peace Teas were held all over the country to mark Peace Day on July 19, 1919 to celebrate the end of the First World War. However, whilst this was the first recorded mass event there had been local events with street parties before 1919.
Since then street parties have continued to be a tradition to mark major national events including VE and VJ Days, the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, The Queen’s silver, golden, diamond and platinum jubilees; and multiple royal weddings.
This year’s events have been organised to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III on May 6 with parties being held across the bank holiday weekend. The Eden Project’s Big Lunch is also being held across the country to mark the Coronation.
Below is a list of some of the Coronation parties which have been registered with Cornwall Council and require a road closure. This list is not exhaustive as not all events have yet been added to the council’s mapping system. Times stated are those which the road closures have been applied for and may differ to the event times.
