A MIXED breed beauty has been named “Good Citizen” in the regional heats for Scruffts – the annual cross-breed competition run by the Kennel Club.

Luna, a four-year-old dog from Looe, will now go on to compete in the semi-final stages hosted at the world’s most famous dog show, Crufts, in 2022.

The Scruffts heat, the third of six being held this year, took place at The Bathurst Estate, Cirencester as part of DogFest West. The competition attracted crossbreeds and their owners from all over the region but just four have made it through to the next stage.

Speaking of their win, Luna’s owner Michelle Down said: “My husband James and I are over the moon with joy, and surprised she was awarded first place! It’s such a great pleasure and achievement for her and us.

“Luna is a very kind, caring, loving, intelligent girl. She’s a mix of Border Collie, German Shepherd, Rough Collie and Huntaway which are all clever breeds.”

Luna and Michelle have been taking part in the Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme since 2019, with the Liskeard and District Canine Association, and Luna sailed through her Bronze exam. The pair are now waiting to complete the silver exam, once the restrictions imposed by the local authorities have eased.

The Scruffts Family Crossbreed Dog of the Year competition, exclusively supported by pet food makers James Wellbeloved, is open to all crossbreeds and mixed breed dogs, of all shapes, sizes and age (as long as they are over six months).

All dogs competing in the Good Citizen category are judged against the following qualities:

• Good character

• Good health

• Good personality

• Good temperament with people and other dogs

The other classes were Most Handsome Crossbreed Dog, Prettiest Crossbreed Bitch, and Golden Oldie Crossbreed

Lucy Williams, Marketing Manager for James Wellbeloved said: “Congratulations to our four brilliant semi-finalists who have all qualified to Crufts next year. It was a fantastic day at DogFest West at The Bathurst Estate and we were impressed by all the entrants who took part.

“James Wellbeloved is very proud to exclusively support Scruffts and we’re looking forward to seeing how our semi-finalists progress.”
