PLANS to build a budget supermarket on the outskirts of Liskeard have hit a stumbling block following an objection from the town council. International company Aldi had put in a bid, to Caradon District Council, to build a foodstore near Liskeard Community Hospital, on Charter Way. Now Liskeard Town Council has voted unanimously against backing the scheme because of the affect it could have on the town centre. It is similar to the stance Saltash Chamber of Commerce took when Aldi's rivals, Lidl, proposed to build a store there. It claimed a Lidl store would rip 'the heart out of Saltash town centre', and would increase traffic problems. However, despite the concerns, planning permission for Lidl's store was granted. Liskeard Town Council is now hoping more consideration will be given to its views as the planning application goes before Caradon council in the next few months. At their November meeting, Liskeard councillors stated that an Aldi store on the outskirts of town would snatch too much business away from the Co- op supermarket in the town. In a retail assessment document, given to the town council, Aldi claims that a new store would take 7.35 per cent of business away from the Co-op, something Liskeard town councillor Nick Mallard thinks is too risky. 'It doesn't sound a lot,' said cllr Mallard, 'but we know that trading in Liskeard is fragile and there is a concern that that sort of loss might affect the Co- op and force it to shut down.'
