Brotherhood meeting

AT CALLINGTON Brotherhood's meeting in the Methodist Chapel, members welcomed Maurice Bennett who was the guest speaker. Maurice also played some cornet solos and choruses written by members of the Salvation Army, of which he is a member.

Basil Bunkum read a passage from the Bible and organist Barry Higgins accompanied the musical items and hymn singing.

On the following Sunday, Kevin Veal presided and welcomed Rev Martyn Smith. Martyn, a minister in the Saltash circuit, spoke on the history of Methodism and the inspired preaching of John Wesley.

Musical items were given by former president Bob Hope. Accompanied by Mrs Jill Rickard, Bob's solos included 'In the Garden' and 'Bless this House'. A scripture reading was given by Fernley Burrows and Cecil Pearce chose some of his favourite hymns.

Youth to help

THE Noise is an event being run in Callington by St Mary's Youth. The event started on Thursday August 23 and will run until August 25 where The Noise will be doing a variety of projects in the community. These range from clearing Muddy Lane, a day helping the people of Callington, taking pets to the old peoples home and offering an umbrella escort if it is a rainy day. A celebration in the park will be taking place at around 7.30pm on Saturday evening once the project work is complete..

A member of the group said: 'We are doing The Noise because we love Callington and we thought it would be great if we could give something back to it and show that we care.'

Watch out for these helpful people in and around Callington from 9.45 until 12 noon and then from 1.30 until the end of the day both today (Friday) and on Saturday August 25.

A fun family

tennis event

MUMS, dads and children, aged up to 16-years-old, are invited to take part in a fun family tennis tournament on September 2, organised by East Cornwall Tennis Centre, Callington.

Teams of one adult and one child can enter at only £3 per pair. Funds raised will towards setting up tennis scholarships for local talented players, raising money for a second coach to do outreach work in schools and setting up more subsidised tennis courses for the community. registration is at 9.30am and in case of rain there are new indoor courts available for the event, which are at Callington Community College, Launceston Road, Callington.

Autumn show

CALLINGTON'S annual Autumn Show takes place in Callington Town Hall on September 15 from 1.45pm until 4.30pm.

There will be many displays and stalls, including flowers, vegetables, photography, art and handicrafts to poetry and calligraphy. Refreshments will be available.
