Callington may have lost this match but, decimated by injuries that meant seven players pulling out in the final 24 hours before the match, playing with a bare 11 until losing one to injury, the young men of Callington showed why the future of Callington Town is looking rosy indeed.
The Town manager, Dave Rider, is no stranger to having to re-arrange his team on the day of the match, but even for him, the amount of people ringing up with injuries took him aback. But his charges, all but three of whom were under 20, rose to the occasion magnificently to take the game to leaders Bere Alston.
With the wind and hail at their backs in the first half, Bere Alston should have dominated play and did indeed score two goals, but Callington could and probably should have found the net themselves but for some wayward finishing. When influential midfielder Matt Reid limped off after 25 minutes with a re-occurence of a leg injury, the 10 men of The Town did not give up.
Early in the second half, and with the Sun now beating down, Adam Burgoyne let rip with a ferocious shot that found the far corner of the opposition net to reduce the arrears. Worse was to follow for the now faltering visitors as Andy Shorten beat the keeper to a loose ball for net the equaliser on the hour.
Bere Alston went back in front and then came the moment that changed the shape of the game. Darren Woolley took an indirect free kick fully 50 yards out and just inside his own half. The long kick deceived both sets of players and the Alston keeper could only watch in horror as he appeared to brush the ball as it went over his head into the net. The Callington players celebrated only to be cut short when the referee, on the advice of the Bere linesman, decided that the keeper had not in fact touched the ball and the goal was disallowed.
For the first time, the Callington heads visibly dropped and Bere Alston took advantage to net two further goals to secure the points but they were made to work very hard for the three points to close in on the Division Four East Championship.
