Plans for the demolition of a former Callington nursing home and its replacement with new homes have been rejected by a Government planning inspector. Caradon District Council's planning committee rejected the proposals for the redevelopment of Beechcroft, Liskeard Road, in July last year but applicants Mr and Mrs Graves appealed against the decision. It was proposed that the original Victorian building, together with a timber frame bungalow in the grounds, be demolished and replaced with a residential development to include affordable homes. But inspector Christopher Gethin ruled that, while a scheme could be designed which would complement the site's setting in a Conservation Area, this did not outweigh concerns over the suitability of a long, narrow plot some of which was outside the local development boundary, to accommodate sufficient amenity space and landscaping to meet minimum standards of residential amenity. 'The planning gain from providing a small number of affordable dwellings does not, in my opinion, justify the inappropriate extension of the development boundary,' he said.
