ALARM over proposed road closures in the New Year has led to a call for an urgent meeting.

Cornwall councillor Andrew Long wants the meeting with council staff and officers from road contractors Cormac to discuss proposals to re-surface parts of the A390 between Callington and Gunnislake.

Cllr Long, Mebyon Kernow councillor for Callington, said: ‘In these difficult financial times, getting investment on the main A390 is to be welcomed and it is true that some sections of the road are in a very poor state, but there are deep concerns about proposed day time closures which could last a couple of weeks in the middle of winter.

‘We need to ensure that every other avenue for completing these works has been exhausted.’

‘I have spoken to the local bus provider, Citybus and the schools transport department of the council and both have expressed concerns regarding how this will work.

‘So I have organised a meeting with the council, Cormac and myself to see if any other solutions are available that would ease the problems.’

Cllr Long helped avoid the closure of the A390 between Callington and Liskeard at Callington Newbridge back in 2013 when an initial two-week closure was proposed.
